Shearling is based in Los Angeles, California. 2 members of the band, Alex Kent and Sylvie Simmons, were apart of Sprain and after they had disbanded, they went on to continue their artistic collaborations. The duo enlisted the help of Andrew Chanover and Wesley Nelson, and announced their formation on July 2024. Elizabeth Carver later joined the band in 2025.
They played their first show on August 2024, with one of the songs from their setlist being a further evolved version of "Radio", a song that in its previous iterations had been performed by Sprain first in May 2023 until their last show in September of that same year. In February 2025, the fully developed version of the song was performed for the first time, expanding from 17 minutes to an hour long behemoth. On May 2025, the studio version of the song was released as its own album, with the full name of the piece being revealed as "Motherfucker, I am Both: "Amen" and "Hallelujah"..." after years of anticipation.
After playing a small number of shows in California, Shearling embarked on their first tour in Europe from August to September 2025. Their second European tour is planned to take place from April to May 2026.
The band has been working on a "sister record" to Motherfucker
